History’s first blood-sucking monster was a lot scarier than anything you saw on “TrueBlood.”

Long before we watched Edward Cullen sparkle in the “Twilight” sun, a terrifying, rotting corpse plagued a small town in Croatia. He wasn’t a sexy, undead hunk, but instead a horrifying monster and history’s first ever documented vampire. His name was Jure Grando and this is his mysterious story.

It all started in the quiet Croatian town ofKringa.

Little is known about Jure Grando’s mortal beginnings, except that he was a relatively unknown peasant in the small Istrian village of Kringa during the 17th century. He died of an unknown illness in 1656 and was buried in the local cemetery by FatherGiorgio.

Except he didn’t stayburied.

Shortly after his death, locals claimed they saw Grando wandering the village at night, knocking on houses that were then plagued by sudden illness and death. He started haunting his widow too, raping and tormenting her as he laughed and gasped forair.

Grando was officially classified as a “strigon,” a European term for a male witch who feeds on human blood and uses evil forces to stay immortal. It was believed that if a person died during the period when the ‘strigon’ was sighted, it meant he or she had beeneaten.

The story goes that Grando tormented his village for 16 years, until mayor Miha Radetich got so fed up he gathered a group of villagers to open his grave and pierce his stomach with a woodenstake.

But Grando just laughed at his attackers.

So they called again upon Father Giorgio, who tried to exorcise the corpse with a crucifix, without luck. Finally, one brave villager took a saw and decapitated him — as soon as he cut through skin, Grando let out a blood-curdling scream before finally expiring.

Alas, the legend liveson…

We can thank natural historian So Danca CH54 TStrap Character Shoe 2 Heel BLACK get to buy sale online TBpu4ab
for documenting Grando’s story in his book “The Glory of the Duchy of Carnoli,” which he wrote using word-of-mouth lore from Kringa’s villagers. Today it’s a sleepy town, but vampire-themed bars and tourist hot spots keep Grando’s undead spiritalive.

I am grateful to be here with my wife, Debi, and my two youngest children—who are currently attending BYU—and several other family members who have come to be with us.

It is an honor to be invited to speak to you today. Several years ago I received an invitation to speak at Women’s Conference. When I told my wife, she asked, “What have they asked you to speak on?”

I was so excited that I got my words mixed up and said, “They want me to speak about changing strengths into weaknesses.”

She thought for a minute and said, “Well, they’ve got the right man for the job!”

RELATED SPEECH

She’s correct about that. I could give a whale of a talk on that subject, but I think today I had better go back to the original topic and speak about changing weaknesses into strengths and about how the grace of Jesus Christ is sufficient (see Ether 12:27 , DC 17:8 , 2 Corinthians 12:9 )—sufficient to cover us, sufficient to transform us, and sufficient to help us as long as that transformation process takes.

A BYU student once came to me and asked if we could talk. I said, “Of course. How can I help you?”

She said, “I just don’t get grace.”

I responded, “What is it that you don’t understand?”

She said, “I know I need to do my best and then Jesus does the rest, but I can’t even do my best.”

She then went on to tell me all the things she should be doing because she’s a Mormon that she wasn’t doing.

She continued, “I know that I have to do my part and then Jesus makes up the difference and fills the gap that stands between my part and perfection. But who fills the gap that stands between where I am now and my part?”

She then went on to tell me all the things that she shouldn’t be doing because she’s a Mormon, but she was doing them anyway.

Finally I said, “Jesus doesn’t make up the difference. Jesus makes all the difference. Grace is not about filling gaps. It is about filling us.”

Seeing that she was still confused, I took a piece of paper and drew two dots—one at the top representing God and one at the bottom representing us. I then said, “Go ahead. Draw the line. How much is our part? How much is Christ’s part?”

She went right to the center of the page and began to draw a line. Then, considering what we had been speaking about, she went to the bottom of the page and drew a line just above the bottom dot.

REPOSTED DIRECTLY FROM INMAN NEWS. THIS CONTENT HAS NOT BEEN MODERATED BY WFG NATIONAL TITLE.

This winter, Inman is obsessing over leadership in real estate. We’re publishing profiles, QAs, strategy guides, and an in-depth 5-part report on what the industry wants from its leaders. Then, on March 26-28, we’re going to gather those leaders in the California desert to digest all of these inputs and figure out where to go from here.

This is a collaborative process. Pleaseengage with our posts, and send us feedback to leadership@inman.com . And if you are a leader who wants to join us in the desert in March, or if you want to recommend a colleague, send a note to brad@inman.com and tell us why.

Inman is asking the industry what the future of real estate leadership looks like. While much of that conversation will focus on who future leaders will be, the most fascinating aspect may be our increasingly transparent environment, which will force leaders to change the way they do business. For those relying on traditional tactics to stay in power, the outlook is bleak.

Through new media and ever-growing access to data, transparency in the real estate industry is driving the massive changes we’re seeing in business models and industry power players. Billions of dollars are being invested in the brokerage world, as investors and technologists find ways to engage an informed consumer pool and snatch profits from traditional businesses.

Tomorrow’s leaders will strive to give customers greater access and insights through our data, and run their organizations with greater visibility and accountability in this new environment.

Knowing more than your customer has been the leverage that many traditional companies used to maintain profits in the past. From individual agents to the industry’s largest organizations, proprietary knowledge was power. That advantage is vanishing for many today.

While information-savvy companies are building new and fascinating ways to leverage data, some in the traditional industry are trying to build bigger blinders. Customers, on the other hand — whether they’re buyers , Diadora Mens Titan Premium Sneaker White/Chili Pepper Red perfect ITYX8upZ
, agents or brokers — are demanding transparency and clarity in their business decisions.

The biggest stories in real estate today bear out this transition. Competitors or not, their recent successes have to be recognized and considered.

Redfin advertises its commission rates, its agent salaries, even its performance metrics, to the public. Compass’s six-figure onboarding checks, a brokerage tactic that would have been hush-hush in the recent past, is today’s open recruiting tool. Low-cost brokerages and franchisors like HomeSmart and NextHome have visibility like no midsize company would have had in the past, and their straightforward, concise pitches are garnering headcounts.
